Week of June 25th – Activities

We all had a fun time this weekend. Polo on friday, saturday morning, and again Sunday afternoon (we didn’t get rained one, well not much).  Lots of horseback riding, friends, learning, nice weather… that’s what summer means!

HUGE THANKS to Jeremy and Anne-Marie and Steve for the barbecue after — what a pleasant surprise!

This coming week we got, guess what, more of the same!!!  Here’s some early notice on some things to note in your calendar:

1) Phil, his friends and family will be in town to play on Sunday.

2) We’re going to move next Sunday’s chukkas earlier in the day so people have time to partake of the July 1st celebrations that evening. Let me know if a noon start time doesn’t work for you.

3) Now that summer is here, camp is starting.  That means on several weekday mornings, you can probably play and learn polo or work on your riding skills.  There’s nothing formal to arrange, just send me an email ( wyaternick at hotmail dot com) a day or two before.

And, way off in the distance, we’ve pencilled in Saturday September 8th for the “near the end of the year end club” club tournament. Of course all people should participate plus it’ll be a pot luck party.

This week, we’ll be planning beginner chukkas on Tuesday and Friday nites.  On Wednesday, we’ll have our usual club chukkas with mixed beginner and faster polo. Not sure what’s happening saturday — we’ll see where the crowd takes us.

Happy riding!

EXPERIENCED PLAYERS
If you are an experienced player who wants to play lots of polo, the fee is $100.
You’ll be placed into one of four evenly matched teams.
You get four chukkers on friday night.
You get four chukkers on saturday at 1pm.
If your team does well, you get four more at 3pm.
You also get four chukkers on Sunday at eleven AM.
* times and structure subject to change (slightly, depending on numbers)
These are umpired chukkers and you’ll be be a member of a inter-club team (designed so the teams are balanced).
The fee also gets you a catered dinner and saturday evening entertainment (including a rented bull riding machine)

BEGINNER PLAYERS
If you are new to riding and polo, then we’re having coached chukkers just for you.
Experienced players will be on hand to give you advice and cheer you on.
You’ll get to play twice in slow-paced games and receive advice in real-time from a professional polo player during the entire game.
It’s a great learning / practice / getting experience exercise and is highly recommended.
The fee for this is only $50 for friday at 6:30 and then you stick around to enjoy the fast-paced action at 7.
You can also come for saturday at noon for an additional $50 and then, again, stick around for the fast-paced action all afternoon and the party on Saturday night.
If you do either Friday or Saturday, you can also play for free on Sunday at approximately 2pm (when the fast games end).
In other words, your total cost is $100 to get that great experience and advice, three chances to play polo, including the party.

EVEN IF YOU HAVEN’T TRIED POLO YET, THIS WOULD BE AN AWESOME TIME TO TRY IT — TOTAL IMMERSION !!!

Extra tickets for your guests at the party are available at $30/person (covers food and mech-bull).

There’s approximately 30 people coming from Toronto so we already have a great deal of momentum!

Please reply by Friday if you would like to take part — I hope you do — the more the merrier!
To enter, just reply to me.  Don’t delay your booking, we have to finalize the caterer and book the horses.

Start of Season Newsletter

Hey Folks,

If you are on this list because you expressed an interest in Polo, it’s now that time when you can come see the matches and see what a friendly group of people we are, and how much fun it is to chase a ball down the field with your teammates riding nearby hoping you’ll score a goal or get a pass.

This year, we hope to play on Tuesdays (7pm), Wednesdays (7pm), and Sundays (4pm).
We will also play on Fridays (7pm) if demand warrants.
Tuesdays and Fridays are exclusively friendly skill building games suitable for beginners.
On Wednesdays and sundays, I’ll schedule some slower ones for those who are comfortable at a slow canter.

As you can see, we are having lots of polo intended for beginners so don’t be afraid if what you see is too fast for you. We can arrange for lessons for you at any time that’s mutually convenient ($50/hour private lesson, horse and tack included except you need boots with heels and preferably your own riding helmet).

Depending on the weather tomorrow, we’ll be on the field to play and practice polo at 7.
Because it’s early in the seasons, I won’t organize anything until I see who shows.

Tomorrow and Wednesday nite, I will be at the barn between six PM and six-forty five PM to take membership fees.
At six forty five, I will leave the barn to go play on the field.
  — this is a good time for past members to pay their fees and register — all fees are due on June 1st.
  — if you know how, you can send funds by email to this email ID.
  — cheques should be made to Manotick Polo Club or pay by cash.
  — Please note: you need to be a member to carry a polo mallet on the property.
  — For insurance reasons I need printed proof that you joined the Ontario Equestrian Federation
      — joining can be done online:
http://horse.on.ca/membership/
.
      — bring me a receipt or a membership card.

Wednesday nite SEVEN PM will be the start of our polo season.
Game starts at 7 sharp. The throw-in is at 7 PM.

You will need to bring both a solid black shirt and a solid white shirt every time you come (in case the teams change).
Black (or very very dark blue) and Totally White Folks — that’s the two shirt colours this year.
Show up in something that’s ambiguous and you will be asked to borrow a shirt from someone.

The DAY BEFORE A GAME, you will need to email me how many chukkers you want to be in and if you want them to be fast or not fast.  Please do not phone it in. Please do not send me an email that you don’t plan to play – it just fills my inbox and makes it hard to recognize who will and won’t play.

So this means you send an email by Monday midnight if you want to play on Tuesday.
Tuesday midnight if you want to play on Wednesday.
Saturday midnight if you want to play on Sunday.

I will try to alternate between the slow and fast but this may not always be possible due to availability of horses, riders, and horse conditioning.
The first two Chukkers will be five minutes apart, then a ten minute break, then five minutes apart between 3 and 4.
It will be up to you to book your chukkers the day before.
Late entries will not be accepted after I’ve sent out the chukker list.
I will send out the chukker roster first thing in the morning on the day of the match.
I will not be delivering chukker lists to the field this year.
Sundays will be run the same as Wednesdays on weekends matches start at 4pm.
That’s right: FOUR PM — this is different than last year which was 1pm.
Four PM lets people get some chores done or do something with their family in the first part of the day.
It’s also after the hottest part of the day which is better for the horses.
The throw-in is at four PM.

If you would like to or are planning to lease a horse, contact me and let’s get it going. The horse isn’t getting fit with you not riding it and that’s going to restrict the polo you can play.

Adios,
Nachismo

Here’s four of us who went to an Umpire Clinic last weekend ….

Polo Clinic – May 19 and May 20

Are you interested in trying out the sport of horse polo? Come join us at the “Average Joes” polo club here in Ottawa. This is a great way to learn the sport and see if you like it.

The clinic will be taught by Phil Van Der Burgt of the Cedar Valley Polo Club in Markham Ontario.

We will work on the riding, rules, game strategy, mallet and ball control, the line of the ball, positions, etc. For the more advanced players will work on neck and tail shots, controlling the ball and your horse at speed, fouls, and general game play.

The clinic will run for 2 days Saturday and Sunday May 19-20, 2012. The clinic is going to be limited to 10 players, the cost for the 2 days will be only $300. If you can only make one day, please come anyway — we’ll fit you in!

The schedule will run as follows:

Saturday May 19, 2012
10am Hand mallets and wooden horse
11am game play and line up rules and strategy

4pm Coaching chukkas

Sunday May 20, 2012
